Journey Through Values

Stop reading this. No, seriously, stop reading and clear your mind. Ok you may begin reading again, but before going further see if you can give the five values that Journey Church preaches. If you’re not a member you don’t have to pass this test, although reading on will help inform you of what our five core values are and how they shape our ministry. And that helps all of us understand better why we do what we do.

In the end, we want to not only proclaim with words but to also show with actions that we 1. Love God and 2. Love People, which are the greatest two commands that Jesus gave us in the New Testament. We flesh that out with our mission statement which reads: To call all people to full devotion to Jesus Christ. While a great mission statement, that doesn’t quite lead us to a place where we can see why each of our ministry teams are necessary and how they fulfill our mission statement yet. So from there we have three legs upon which we stand: Love the Gospel; Transform the Culture; and Engage the Church.

Then come our five values: Worship; Authentic Community; Truth; Missional Journey; and Faith. Below you’ll see a diagram of how the three legs of our mission statement and our five values work together like a wheel with spokes, all interdependent upon the other. We love the Gospel, which is God’s perfect and inerrant Truth. Then through a worship lifestyle and by acting upon our faith we are able to transform the culture. The great commission Jesus calls us to is, in other words, to be on a missional journey; a journey that lasts our whole lifetime. Again through worship and faith we are able to—at the same time—engage the church through authentic community. This means being open and vulnerable as we serve alongside one another and as we encourage one another through worship and faith as we return to loving the gospel before we start the whole process over again and again and again, like a wheel rolling down the road.

From this point you can look at any area The Journey puts money, manpower, prayer, faith, time, blood, sweat, and tears into and see why and how we do what we do in order to bring all people to full devotion to Jesus Christ.

The mission statement and the three pillars upon which it rests are often seen on printed materials and spoken of on Sunday mornings and even in every issue of the Vibe and weekly eVibe, but the five values get a little less attention. So over the next five months we’ll be dusting them off and exploring each value one at a time, making sure we all understand why—of all the values we could have chosen—we chose these and how they serve as the spokes of the ever-turning wheel that is The Journey. We’ll see why it falls where it does in the diagram below, and finally we’ll examine what ministries fall under, embody, and communicate these values in real and personable ways to our community.
