Lead Pastor

Summary

Journey Church is a committed and capable congregation located in Everett, WA seeking a full-time Lead Pastor
who will preach the Word of God, humbly shepherd the congregation, and provide biblical spiritual leadership.
This is a Baptist church which cooperates with the Southern Baptist Convention and that consistently
emphasizes the sufficiency of the Bible as the Word of God, the need for believers in Jesus Christ to grow in their
faith and obedience, fellowship, corporate worship, and sharing the Gospel with others. Over the years, and by
God’s grace, the church has continued to love God and love one another as they strive to live in grace and truth.

The Lead Pastor contributes to the larger mission of Journey Church to glorify God by making disciples of all
nations, by proclaiming and applying God’s Word to the lives of individuals, the church, and our community. He
will be responsible for leading the church in remaining faithful to this vision, for the affirmation and
development of future church leaders, for providing instruction in sound doctrine and protecting the body from
those who would contradict it, and for ensuring effective pastoral care is provided to church members. The Lead
Pastor will serve with the supervision and mutual submission of a plurality of elders who share equal influence in
their oversight and decision making.

Key Responsibilities

Preaching & Teaching
  • Committed to biblical exegesis and the accurate exposition and application of God's Word
  • Participate as the primary preacher for the Sunday worship service, preaching a majority of the
time
  • Responsible for overseeing the necessary structures, processes, schedules, and activities related
to teaching and preaching the full counsel of God
  • Work together with the elders and teachers in the church to provide regular opportunities for
instruction and equipping of the body outside of the Sunday worship service such as evening
classes and study groups

Spiritual Leadership
  • Lead the church body by setting an example to follow and imitate in speech, in conduct, in love,
in faith, in purity, a model of good works
  • Develop and encourage a culture of maturing in Christ, loving, serving, and admonishing one
another, loving neighbors, evangelism, discipleship, outreach and a passion for missions
  • Communicate the mission and vision of the church to ministry leaders and the church body in a
way that is understandable, inspirational and actionable

Pastoral Care
  • Devote oneself to daily prayer and Bible study (Acts 6:4, 1 Tim. 2:1)
  • Know the flock, cultivating personal relationships and together with the elders providing
spiritual care for each member
  • Love the flock, humbly and sacrificially serving the sheep
  •  Watch over and care for the flock with instruction and admonishment; motivated by love,
encourage, remind, urge, insist, charge, and rebuke so that the body will be sound in faith and
devoted to good works
  • Protect the flock from error and false teaching from within and without
  • Participate with elders in administering church discipline and managing conflict in the church,
always seeking to reconcile relationships and promote unity within the church

Ministry oversight
  • Establish leadership development systems that facilitate the development of current and future
elders, deacons, and ministry leaders throughout the church
  •  Examine and recommend individuals as candidates to become elders and deacons
  • Develop program for disciples reproducing disciples; growing in their relationship with Jesus
  • Actively pursue external training/equipping for both self and current/future leaders

Administration
  • Build a sense of teamwork among church staff and ministry leaders, leading regular meetings to
coordinate the ministries of the church and facilitate communication
  • Oversee budgets and provide direction on financial functions of the church

Minimum Qualifications

  • Meet the biblical qualifications for overseer (1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9)
  • Demonstrate a growing personal relationship with Christ and exhibit the fruits of the spirit in all aspects
of life; not mastered by any specific sin in his life (Galatians 5:22-3, Colossians 3:12-14, Titus 1:7-8)
  • Open to correction, exhortation, and questions – teachable
  • 5+ years of fruitful ministry experience including some experience leading a ministry or ministry team
  • Affirm the Journey Church Statement of Faith, found at https://joininthejourney.com/doctrine
  • Clear background and reference checks (i.e., criminal records, child abuse and neglect, character and
ability)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters of Divinity from an accredited Seminary or Evangelical university
  • 5+ years of experience in pastoral ministry functioning as lead teaching pastor
  • Experience with biblical counseling and discipleship
  • Alignment with Journey Church's theological distinctives: inerrancy of the scriptures, soteriologically
reformed, complementarian, believer's baptism, elder governed (plurality of elders)
